The Value of Relationships

So much knowledge lays in the minds of many; relationships with anyone should be valued not only for that reason but because we were put on this earth to understand and appreciate our surroundings and everyone within it.
My grandfather is a ninety-one-year-old man. On the surface, he’s a kind man who is oblivious towards his surroundings because of his age, but when we are past surface-level he is way more than that. All my life I have loved my grandfather and I still do but I never really understood the type of person he is until recently. I never really understood how intelligent he was because I wasn’t old enough and I never really spent time with him.
Recently, I have grown to have a very close bond with him and I appreciate having conversations with him because it is absolutely amazing conversing with a man who has been on this earth for over nine decades. I really believe that once I had started enjoying my grandfather’s company, I have grown to value every relationship.
Relationships are super important to me, whether it’s with my martial arts instructors, family members, teachers, close friends; I have learned to appreciate the relationships in which the person wants the best for me. I have grown to understand true friendships and relationships over the ones that are just “one way relationships” which include only one person benefitting and taking from the other person. Many have been in friendships or relationships in which one person constantly takes from the other. I’ve learned to cut these types of relationships because being taken advantage of is the worst feeling ever. I honestly haven’t been in the following situation but martial arts has taught me to learn from other people’s mistakes.
Relationships can either be super beneficial or can be harmful. One huge duty that we have is to appreciate the good ones and make sure they last. Another duty we have is to be aware of bad, “one way relationships” and to cut them off as soon as possible.
